The Millennium Bridge

The Millennium Bridge

These were taken on the same day as the ‘Three Saints’ photos.

The Millennium Bridge is pedestrian only and crosses the Thames from South of St Paul’s Cathedral to the North and the Tate Modern art gallery to the South.

The bridge gained notoriety as the ‘Wobbly Bridge’ when it first opened in 2000, due to it swaying when crowds walked over it.  This has since been cured by dampers being added beneath, after extensive testing.

If you would like to read more about this and watch a video showing the wobbling problem and how it was solved, Arup, the bridge’s designers have a website which tells you all about it. Go to this page and choose Challenge from the top menu.
